Choosing Careers

Choosing careers is not just finding the highest paying careers and hoping that you will enjoy one of them. You want to ultimately choose a career that is a good fit for your personality and allows you to be physically active so that you do not gain weight throughout your career.

If physical fitness and being active are important to you maybe you should choose a career that promotes healthy living. Or you could chose a career that allows you to be more active.

If you have your heart set on being a computer programmer, that is fine. Just be sure to incorporate some exercises to lose weight and keep active throughout the day.

When people are healthy, it's pretty well documented that health-care costs are lower, sick days are fewer and productivity is greater.

Here are some ideas to help you keep the weight off while at work:

  • If you sit a lot, make a point of getting up and moving. Do some push ups, walk around the office, take the stairs, keep a resistance band at your desk to do some biceps curls, etc.
  • If your office has an exercise room, use it! Before work or at lunch time
  • Go for a walk at lunch time. What a great way to get out, get some fresh air and destress. Plus you are burning calories.
  • Organize fitness classes for coworkers. Chances are that you are not the only one who wants to fit in some on the job exercise.
  • Sit on an exercise ball instead of a chair. This will strengthen your abs and back and you'll work on your posture without even trying.
  • Keep busy. Boredom leads to snacking. Avoid mindless munching. Get moving instead.
  • Hold active meetings. Instead of sitting around snacking on cookies and muffins, get out and hold your meeting while going for a walk. Be creative.

Choosing careers that promotes a healthy and active lifestyle will actually makes you a better worker. You will be happier, have more energy, think more clearly and be more productive.
