Definition of Body Composition




For most people, a definition of body composition is simply how much body fat they are carrying.






But it is also lean body tissue. Lowering body fat percentage is a worthwhile goal in weight management.

You should be thinking, lose fat, and maintain muscle.

Body Composition Definition

  • Body Composition: A combination of body fat and lean body tissue (usually considered to be muscle tissue)

  • Essential Fat: Minimal level of body fat needed for good health, temperature regulation, protection, and use of fat soluble vitamins.

Body Fat Percentage Chart

Female

  • Not less than 10% Essential Fat

  • 10-15% Athletic

  • 18-24% Acceptable

  • 30% or greater Obese

Males

  • Not less than 5% Essential Fat

  • 6-10% Athletic

  • 12-18% Acceptable

  • 20% or greater Obese

Lose Fat, Maintain Muscle

The goal of your weight loss program should be to achieve and maintain a healthy body composition.

A healthy weight where you feel fit and comfortable.

This would mean to have a healthy body fat percentage.

Too many of us are just concerned with what number we see on the scale.

If you have been working out with weights and watching what you eat, the number on the scale may stay the same or even go up.

You may have increased muscle weight, which is a good thing.

Defining body composition will help you to clarify what your fitness goals should be.

You should be trying to lose fat and maintain muscle.

This will be a better indicator of your overall level of fitness.
