Water accounts for 60-65% of the body's weight. Maintaining proper hydration is critical to your health and weight loss efforts. Lose as little as 2% and your fat burning efforts and overall performance will suffer.

Every metabolic process in your body depends on water. We spend so much time worrying about carbs, protein and fat that we tend to overlook something as basic as staying properly hydrated.

How does water help with weight loss and fat loss?

  • When you are dehydrated, your body tries to hold onto water.

  • Your waste products in the body do not get flushed out through the kidneys.

  • The liver steps in to help and it can do one of its main jobs, which is to burn stored body fat as energy.

As you can see, you must stay hydrated so that your body works for you in the fat burning process.

How Much Water for Weight Loss

Replenishment of water should really begin long before you even get thirsty. By then it is too late. Dehydration has already set in. The trick is to not let yourself get dehydrated in the first place.

Here are some hydration guidelines:

  • As soon as you get up, start drinking. You are dehydrated from your night of not drinking water

  • Continue drinking throughout the day. Aim for at least 250-500 ml (1-2 cups) per hour

  • Have 500-700 ml (2-3 cups) of water one hour before exercise

  • Have 250-500 ml 15 minutes before your workout

  • Sip water throughout your workout routine

  • Rehydrate following exercise. Start with 250 ml (1 cup). Then go back to 250-500 ml per hour guideline

Understanding the relationship between drinking water and weight loss is crucial to your success and is such an easy thing to do.

You will be stronger, your workouts will be more productive and you will lose body fat.
