Why Is Goal Setting Important?

Why is goal setting important? If you do not know where you want to go, how will you know how to get there? You may not make the types of decisions needed to help you achieve the results you want.



Here is a definition of goal setting: Goal Setting involves establishing specific, measurable and time-targeted objectives.

Okay, so let's say that you want to make some changes in an area of your life. Maybe it is your lack of time management or maybe it is your relationships. Whatever area it may be that you want to improve, you have to set a time frame for this to happen in.

It seems that 90 days is a good amount of time to really make some long lasting improvements. This is one answer for Why is goal setting important. A realistic time frame.

We can look at our personal core values, and we can start to cultivate a positive attitude. An important way to look at goal setting strategies is to figure out the result you want to achieve in 90 days and then to make daily decisions that will get you result you want. This is the main reason for me as to make goal setting important in my everyday routine.

Let's see if any of the following scenarios seem familiar.

The alarm goes off and you think to yourself, "Another ten minutes, that won't make a difference." You hit the snooze. When the alarm sounded again, you think, "I can skip my workout, it won't make a difference."

You not only skipped the gym, you over slept, didn't eat breakfast and you were 20 minutes late for work.

Or how about this one. You stood in line at the cafeteria and you kept looking the muffins and cakes. As you ordered your coffee before you knew it you ordered a piece of cake. You looked at the cake as you took your first bite you thought to yourself, "It won't make a difference."

You took a drag of the cigarette and thought, "It's just one cigarette, it won't make a difference."

You charged those new shoes on your credit card and thought to yourself, "It won't make a difference."

Whether it is that drink you take, the cigarette you smoke, that credit card charge, the extra sleep or any other decision, the list of little single acts we do that we say, "It doesn't make a difference" are endless. Those little acts are the very things that do make all the difference. The extra sleep turned into to not working out, which lead to being late for work. Today you are overweight, out of shape and got passed up for a promotion because of your lack of punctuality. You have never been able to lose the weight you wanted. Maybe you are still smoking. Or are you in serious debt?

Why is goal setting important? You will know what results you want and every decision will be tied to those results. No more excuses. It is time to take responsibility for the decisions that you have made that have gotten you to this point in your life.

We didn't get where we are in our life by any one single act. It's those acts that we say ‘don't make a difference' that we repeat and repeat. They add up. The repetition of those acts is what gets us to where we are. Again, you have to make goal setting important to help keep yourself focused on the results you want to achieve.

We don't gain weight, go in debt or any other situation with the single act. That is how powerful a single act is though, it's the act that leads to how we behave. What's interesting is that at the moment we say, "It doesn't make a difference" -- this is when in fact we knew at that very instant it did make a difference. Unfortunately, over time we actually start to believe it doesn't make a difference. We can make changes.


Keep the Faith
Change Can Happen


What happens to us over time as we don't follow through doing what we know we should, and we lose faith in our lives changing. We lose faith that we can affect our life with what we do. We have allowed ourselves to be convinced that things just don't change. In such, we believe that the outcome will always be the same, therefore what we do truly doesn't make a difference. To put it in simple terms, we have lost faith. We have lost faith in ourselves and in our lives changing.

Following the same logic that no ‘one' act creates the result, it simply puts the behavior in motion that produces the result over time, then you can start changing your life with one act. The moment you say, "It makes a difference" your life will be in motion to change. This is an important self awareness moment.

What you need to do is restore in yourself and in your life the belief that things can change. The fact that you haven't done it before doesn't mean you can't do it now. The moment you start having faith in yourself you can create change in your life.

You might not be able to see the effect that one act has, but if you have faith you will know what the result will bring.

You must restore faith in ‘you' making a difference in your life. It is the very acts that you think, ‘don't make a difference' that make all the difference in the world. Every time you are about to do something that causes you to say to yourself, "It doesn't make a difference," do the opposite and start making a difference in your life. Have faith, you are powerful and what you do ‘does make a difference'. Is goal setting important? Well let's see where you are in 90 days, and then we'll decide.
