Minimalist Design - Less is More

Minimalism is a way of looking at the world. Minimalist design and decorating is an extension of this philosophy. A way of looking at decorating your own personal space. If you have read some of the other articles on this website, you may have come to the realization that I personally feel that we, in the western world, have too much damn stuff. Our houses are filled to capacity with an endless array of nick nacks. Why we feel the need to spend money on all these items is beyond me. Most of the time the item we feel that we must have is forgotten about in a few days, resigned to the back of a closet. If you feel that you have too much stuff, then minimalist decorating and design may just be the look you want.

Minimalist design is defined as reducing a given subject or element to its bare essentials. Think "less is more". Instead of packing as much stuff as possible in any given room, be it a bathroom, bedroom, living room or kitchen, with minimalist design and decorating we would be subtracting more than adding.

Straight and Clean

When I look at interior design images that project a minimalist ideal, I am drawn to the straight, clean and simple design elements that are used. Furniture, architecture, art, even lighting can be influenced by minimalism. Some people may think that this particular style is boring. Au contraire. I love it, and consider it to be both sleek and bold. Where there once was clutter, now there is order. A place for everything, and everything in its place.

Color and Texture

I also enjoy the soft muted colors. The off whites and creams. The light greens and blues. And of course, white. It allows natural light to do its work. That is not to say that you can't add some more vibrant colors. Open floor plans also lend themselves to this particular way of design, but are not a must. Smooth fabrics that are soft to the touch. Shiny, polished surfaces that allow light to reflect are also desired.

Simplicity

There should not be an abundance of clutter. What I like about minimalist style and design is that the eye is drawn naturally to the elements of architecture, furniture or art of a given room. If I do go shopping for something I look for a sleekly designed piece. Even my home theater equipment fits my minimalist design and decorating ideas.

It does not have to be cold and boring. It can be functional, warm and inviting. And maybe you can cut down on some of the clutter that is driving you nuts.
