Why Is Physical Fitness Important?

The greatest wealth is health.

Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.

Why is physical fitness important?
I for one would like to live a very long life and to be able to look after myself. Your overall physical health and well being may just be the most important part of your life.

Most of us would only consider the state of the physical body and may forget about the mental aspects. Keep your mind positive and in good working order as well as your physical self.

What Is Physical Health?

What is physical health? The definition of physical health is

"A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".

Most of us would only consider the state of the physical body and may forget about the mental aspects. Keep your mind positive and in good working order as well as your physical self.

So again we ask why is physical fitness important.

The best way to lose weight and burn fat is to get moving.

But it also keeps us feeling good about ourselves and feeling good mentally. We are more alert and able to handle stressful situations thanks to being more physically active.

Here some of the different types of exercise you should know about:

  • cardiovascular/aerobic -walking, running, biking, rowing, treadmills etc. are just some of the examples

  • resistance training-lifting weights, body weight exercises(pushups, pullups)

  • flexibility-stretching, yoga, Tai Chi

There is so much information out there. What are we to do? Well first of all relax.

Really what we are specifically talking about here is the importance of exercise.

Actual daily physical activity.

Working up a sweat and getting the heart pumping. You must do this on a daily basis as part of your daily weight loss workout plan.

The Benefits of Physical Fitness

Why is physical fitness important? Here are the top ten reasons to exercise

  • Exercising is the "Fountain of Youth". It can reverse the natural decline in metabolism that begins around age thirty. As we enter our 30's, about ½ pound of muscle is lost each year and replaced by fat. A pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat. Which means...

  • Your body will burn more calories when you're sitting on your muscular buttocks than if you're sitting on your "big fat butt"... Muscle is an active tissue that burns 30 to 50 calories per pound at rest each day. A pound of fat only burns three calories per day.

  • Get Fit! Get Happy! Exercising elevates your mood. Studies have shown that lifting weights provides some of the same benefits as anti-depressant medication but without the side effects (except improved self-esteem and self-confidence.)

  • To keep from saying "I've fallen and I can't get up!" Exercising improves your balance and coordination and flexibility.

  • If you do fall you're more likely to get up uninjured. Lifting weights and doing flexibility training strengthens muscles and connective tissues, decreasing the likelihood of injury.

  • You did fall and you couldn't get up. Exercising helps with recovery and rehabilitation. The stronger you are the faster you recover.

  • Your Mom told you to sit up straight. She would want you to lift weights and do yoga because it strengthens the abdominal, back, leg and core muscles that support your spine, which improves your posture.

  • Someone told you to "break a leg". Exercising increases bone density and reduces your risk of developing osteoporosis.

  • You want your heirs to live well on their inheritance... but not any time soon. People who exercise vigorously for 30 minutes five days per week, live almost 4 years longer than their peers, with good health in their later years. People who walked 5 days per week added 1.3 to 1.5 years to their lives.

  • It's never too late to start. See reason #10. Studies on the elderly show weight training causes significant increases in strength, muscle growth, and quality of life, even for people starting to exercise in their 80's or 90's. But why wait until you're 90 to improve your quality of life??? Start today!
