What Is Target Heart Rate?
Heart Rate Calculator

What is target heart rate and how will knowing this help you with your weight loss workout plan? You want to exercise to burn fat as fuel. Fat loss is your primary goal.

The Target Heart Rate (THR), or Training Heart Rate, is a desired range of heart rate reached during aerobic best cardio workout exercise.

Calculating Target Heart Rate

what is target heart rate

To calculate target heart rate zone you will take 220 subtract your age and then multiply that number by the intensity of the workout. This will be expressed as a percentage.

For example:

    220-38(my age)=182 * 0.62=113
    182 * 0.72=131

So when I am on the treadmill or elliptical trainer, I would try to keep my heart rate in the range of 113 beats per minute and 131 beats per minute.

This ensures that my body will be primarily burning fat as fuel. If you workout at too high an intensity you will be burning sugar as fuel and then muscle. That is NOT what you want.

You also need to be in the target heart rate zone for a minimum of 45 continuous minutes.

Target Heart Rate Chart
